Chapter 1.6 - The Clash of the Clans

All the villagers (and Billy) sat on the edge of the grassy riverbank. On the other side of the flowing water, a thick forest of lichen-scabbed trees loomed.

Keedo noticed Billy staring over the water. "That's Elk Clan territory," he said. "We don't go there."

Billy sat patiently between Keedo and Eshana. A few of the female villagers approached Billy, only to touch his face, necklace, and hair, before giggling to themselves and walking away. The young and old men were more interested in Billy's muscles, which they poked and prodded in fascination. Coming from a time of plentiful nutrition, and access to a gym besides, Billy understood that he must seem like a giant to them.

Billy’s reaction to the villager's curiosity was to remain completely still, sweat dripping down his embarrassed face, and hands nestled in his loincloth covered lap.

“They are intrigued by you,” Keedo whispered to Billy. “They haven’t seen someone like you before. Your skin is quite pale. Eshana had to explain to them that you were not dead.”

How soon the ego deflated. “Fantastic for my self-esteem,” Billy groaned. Still, this wasn’t about him. He raised his eyes towards Auru, at the edge of the riverbank, gleefully commanding the attention of the crowd. With his large size and larger personality, it wasn’t a difficult feat capturing everyone’s attention.

Auru puffed out his chest, and wildly gesticulated while he recounted how he had rescued Billy from being eaten. “And then–RAGGHH–came the biggest lion anybody ever saw! He would have torn out Billy’s throat if it hadn’t been for my quick thinking, and my undefeatable bear hug!” At this, Auru was seized by the need to flex his muscles and grin for the crowd.

Some of the younger women giggled to themselves. Billy put on a shit-eating grin, while everyone whispered and pointed at him. The younger boys applauded their hero hunter’s performance, of course.

Eshana, who had patiently indulged the hunter, rolled her eyes. “And how long is this tale?” the crone asked, fidgeting with her bone necklace. “I asked merely for an introduction, not a life story.”

Auru’s eyes widened. “Ohhhh, sorry Eldress! I’m just getting to the good part! RAGH! So then I snapped that monster like a twig–RAGGH!” Auru hammered his chest, causing the women to gasp, the men to ‘Ooooh’ and ‘Aaah’, and the Eldress to…well…yawn.

A tossed pebble, from the direction of the opposite embankment, landed at Auru’s feet. He regarded it for a moment, before shifting his language in a less ‘bombastic’ direction. The muscular hunter’s cheeks reddened. “And then I was…uh…rewarded handsomely by the mysterious, kindly, Billy."

Eyes darted in Billy's direction. His color changed. "Oh, Auru, thanks, but they don't need to--"

"He and I mated most passionately!”

“Oh,” Billy said, coughing. His cheeks flamed red.

“I mounted him like the bull of my namesake,” Auru went on, with the enthusiasm of someone describing their favorite meal. “And just so, I filled him to the brim with my potent seed. I am sure he will produce many offspring in due time." He smiled cheerfully. "Isn’t that right, Billy?”

Even though Billy’s head was now firmly buried in his hands, he could still feel eyes fastened to his body. He looked up at Keedo’s smirking face and said, “Hey, man. Do you mind taking that spear of yours and stabbing it right through my heart?”

“What?” Keedo said. “Like, right now?”

“His humor is strange but it is only a jest,” Eshana said to her faithful bodyguard, probably saving Billy’s life in the process. Suddenly, Eshana tilted her face up towards the riverbank. “Oh no. Gods be good—here comes trouble…”

Billy attempted to follow her line of vision, but Auru made a better door than a window, and took up most of Billy’s sight line.

“That’s when Billy and I saw your village and decided to approach your clan. You see, I don’t have a clan of my own anymore. Not since the big fire. That’s why I’m hoping you will allow Billy and I to stay with you. I can offer my hunting skills, and Billy can off his fertility skills. He will make a great mate for many of your men!”

Plonk.

“Gr?” A pebble collided with Auru’s head. He groaned and stepped out of the way.

Now, Billy saw who the hell was chucking stones at his oversized friend. Billy expected some Elk Clan punk from the other side of the river. He did not expect one of the biggest, most beautiful brutes he’d ever laid eyes on. “Uh…Auru, buddy.”

The villagers began whispering and pointing. Some of the men even growled, bearing their teeth, and pounding the earth in anger. Eshana sat with her eyes shut tight in frustration.

With a stern look, Keedo used his spear to push himself off the ground. “Do you want me to—”

“No,” Eshana said, curtly. “Let us first see how Auru reacts to our…friendly neighbor.”

Plonk!

The next pebble smacked Auru right in the cheek. “Ow! Who threw that!?” Auru’s face turned the color of fresh ochre. He could not let this insult slide! “RAAAAAHHH!” Auru roared. He turned and stomped down towards the shore to face his new nemesis. “Hey, you! Big man! STOP THAT!”

“And just who is this enormous, smelly, fool!” the man on the other side of the water said boastfully. Billy saw that he rivaled Auru in size, muscle, and even looks!

“Smelly!?” Auru said. “I bathe in the river every day! I am Auru, the fiercest hunter of them all. And who are you, stone thrower?”

“That is Strong Elk,” Eshana said, for Billy and Auru’s benefit. “He is the leader of the Elk Clan, who once hunted alongside us and shared their bounty.” Billy thought she looked visibly annoyed at the intruder. This was obviously not the first time he had pestered the clan.

Billy looked over at the living, Frank Frazetta illustration towering over the other side of the water. Strong Elk captured the essence of his very name. He was beautiful and masculine, with broad shoulders, and pectorals just as big as Auru’s (and a tiger-striped loincloth twice as small as Auru’s). Unlike Auru, however, Strong Elk was fairer of skin, with hair the color of sun on a clear day.

“HAHAHA!” The muscular clan leader’s chest bounced up and down with the timbre of his laughter. Once Elk had made his opinions known–and was thoroughly satisfied at the new color of Auru’s reddening skin–he tossed back his long, wheat-colored locks over his shoulder in arrogance.

He dropped the next pebble, meant for Auru’s noggin, into the river. “You simple Bull Clan people really believe this moron? Us in the Elk Clan don’t waste time listening to silly stories. We are fierce hunters!” To the point, Elk’s eyes took on a sharp ferocity, and he roared so loudly that it nearly sent a ripple over the water. The beating of his chest sounded like the rolling thunder of an oncoming storm.

Billy bit his lip. But not out of nervousness. I...need to feel him. Internally.

Auru turned to see the women of the tribe making doe-eyes at the Elk, and the men draw back in fear of Strong Elk’s might. That incensed Auru more than the muscle-brained moron from the other side of the river interrupting his story. “Auru is the fiercest hunter around!” Auru barked back. He took in a lungful of air and let out his own, less impressive roar, in the hopes of intimidating his rival.

Strong Elk merely shrugged off the attempt. “Heh. The mewing of a lion cub, and nothing more. Auru, you may have the muscles, but that’s ALL YOU HAVE! You don’t even have a mate!”

Billy cleared his throat. “Hi,” he said in a small voice. He raised his hand. “I am right here.”

“I cannot see you very well from this side of the river,” Strong Elk called back. “Which means you too must be very tiny and insignificant.”

Auru threw Billy a glance sharper than a spear. “Huh. I seem to remember one sleep ago when you said you could not be my mate. What changed?”

Damn, I miss when Eros’s magic filtered out the stone age sarcasm. “Hey, I’m just trying to be a bro! Are you gonna’ let pretty boy talk to you like that, Auru?”

“Do not come into this village and sow seeds of disharmony,” Eshana warned Billy, darkly, chilling him to the bone. “There is more to Strong Elk’s spirit than at first glance and—oh no, Auru, don’t!”

Auru stomped down to the muddy riverbank, leaving craters of footprints behind. “I DON’T SEE A MATE WITH YOU EITHER MAMMOTH-BREATH!” He pointed accusingly at the blonde brute.

“Ha! I have many wives and many children. Sounds like you have nothing, and have come into this village seeking shelter, like a stray wolf cub sniffing for his mama’s milk.”

Auru grit his teeth. “You may claim to sow your seed like a wild beast, but I bet all the women in your tribe think you’re stupid…AND THAT YOU STINK!”

“S-STINK!?” Strong Elk’s eyes bugged out. Suddenly embarrassed, he sniffed his own armpit. “STRONG ELK SMELLS THE BEST! COME ACROSS THE RIVER AND SAY THAT TO MY FACE!” The near-naked goliath from the other tribe held up a meaty fist.

Auru bore his teeth and growled, ready to lunge forward, swim the short length of the gap, and clobber Strong Elk across his pretty head. “OH YEAH? I THINK I WILL–STRONG SMELL!”

“Enough!”

This time, it was both Auru and Strong Elk who flinched. Billy, choosing wisely to let the Eldress intercede, scuttled out of Eshana's path. Despite her stature, the Eldress stood tall and proud. She fixed Auru with her gaze. Even Strong Elk was captured by her frightening stare.

Eshana’s voice was as clear as the rushing brook in front of her. “There is no need for disharmony between the Clans of the Bull and Elk. We have gotten along as far back as the time before my mother’s time.” She paused. “We also share a common sorrow. Let tragedy not drive a wedge further between our people but bring us closer together!”

Even from the distance, Billy saw Strong Elk’s expression soften, and the luster of his pride fade. Strong Elk huffed. “Pretty words mean nothing now.” He narrowed his eyes at Auru. “At least your tribe has a new hunter, fool as he is.

Auru snorted in his distaste of Elk’s presence. “Brave for you to say that from all the way over there!”

“I’LL CRUSH YOU!” Strong Elk shouted.

“I’LL CRUSH YOU!” Auru threatened back.

Strong Elk pounded his chest in anger. “RAGGGH!”

Auru did the same, turning his own pectorals red with his handprints. “RAGGGH!”

The children and women scattered at this display of masculine bravado, while the men who had come to watch Auru meekly slunk away, not wanting to catch Strong Elk’s attention. More confused than afraid, Billy watched Eshana remain steadfast, with hands fastened on her hips.

“Boys, BOYS!” she commanded, afraid the two muscle-heads might pass out from shorting out their lungs. “Auru, ignore him. He’s just trying to goad you into doing something stupid.” She gestured to Elk’s side of the watery divide. “And you. You are a leader, not a child. Stop acting like an impudent whelp and return to us when you wish to speak like the leader that you are!”

Whether Eshana's sharp words had truly sunk into his skin, or not, Strong Elk suddenly grew bored with this folly. He turned around, his loin cloth flying in the breeze and giving Billy a glance of Strong Elk’s elklike, muscle butt. “Get a good look at my backside, weaklings. I’ll be sure to return to hear more of your stupid stories–when I’m not hunting big game and RUTTING, that is.” Strong Elk charged up the bank and vanished into the thicket of trees.

Auru pouted and stomped his feet one more time. He whipped around to Billy, Keedo, and the Eldress, suddenly remembering they were all watching him. “He makes me so angry!” he shouted. He wiped sweat from his upper lip. “Just because he’s tall, and has nice hair, and big muscles, and is the leader of his people, doesn’t mean he can bully us, right?”

Eshana breathed, summoning her patience. “No," she said. "Strong Elk was once an ally, but his temperament has changed. He now commands most of the hunting grounds that our once clans shared, and drives many of our people away."

"I'll show him!" Auru spat back. "I'll go into his grounds and fell the biggest antelope you-"

"You will do no such thing," Eshana said, punctuating her statement with a strike of her cane against the wet earth. "Though meager in game, there are other nearby places for you to hunt. Do not invite Strong Elk's wrath by venturing into the grounds on the other side of the river. It is forbidden."

The big hunter blinked, unable to process the Eldress’ words. Billy stood up and gave him a nervous look.

Wise Eshana nodded towards the village grounds, where a roaring fire and smoked meat awaited them for feasting time. “Come now,” she said. “Let us eat and commune, so we may get to know each other better. I think your stories…may be preferred in shorter increments.”

Billy saw an angry vein throbbing on Auru’s forehead. He grunted. “Very well. But tomorrow, I would like to go on a hunt and prove myself worthy, to your people, Eldress.” He smiled down at Billy. “And you will come with me!

“I will?” Billy swallowed.

“Yes! It’s time you became a real hunter. Just like your big friend!”

It wasn't as if Billy could argue, especially as Auru had, in his excitement, pulled Billy into a tight headlock. I'm not sure how much more of Auru's enthusiasm I can take!

Night fell, faster than Billy expected. Being a time before readily available illumination, the villagers went to sleep not long after the sun dipped below the glaciers. Billy's circadian rhythm, however, was still matched to the 2024 lifestyle of caffeine, late night video game sessions, and laying in bed while doom-scrolling on social media. Sleep was still hard.

The floor of Keedo's hut was harder. Billy tried shuffling the straw mats on the floor into something resembling bedding, but all it did seem to do was make Auru giggle at the futile effort. Regretting having ever cursed out the god of love and commencing this disastrous expedition into the past, Billy dejectedly laid himself down on the uncomfortable material and propped his head against his backpack, using it as a pillow.

Prehistoric novelty was starting to wear thin. Billy missed the comfort of his bed, even if it was currently empty. "I don't think I'll be very good at hunting," he mumbled to Auru.

Keedo was on watch-duty for the next few hours, which meant Auru and Billy had the hut to themselves for the night. Next to Billy, the brawny hunter scratched his butt and yawned. "How will you know if you do not try? I can show you how to track game. And how have you managed to survive this long in the wild without learning how to hunt?"

Auru removed his loin cloth and let it drop. Billy had grown accustomed to the natural nudity of both his friend and the villagers now, so he hardly blinked at Auru's 'display'. "Privilege," Billy said. He shut his eyes.

Auru shifted and snuggled his big body up next to his friend. "What kind of animal is that?"

Billy sighed. "Never mind."

"Are you becoming sick?" Auru asked. He wrapped his large arm over Billy's shoulder and neck. "You seem different. Like water may start to come out of your eyes. Maybe you should take those stones off your neck. Unless they're important to you, of course."

"I can't take them off."

"Why not?"

"A god put them on me."

"Oh. Okay."

Billy knew Auru was trying to call him 'moody', but didn't have the language for it. "I am fine," Billy lied. He thought for a moment, and pulled Auru's arm closer across his body. "Just a little sad. I am very far from my tribe. From the people I know."

"What happened to your tribe, anyway?" Auru asked.

"They're still around. Just far away."

"Did they exile you?"

Auru was a warm fixture against Billy, and he welcomed the muscle cuddles. "I exiled myself," Billy admitted. "I stopped being my mate's...mate. He got mad. My friends got mad. Instead of addressing it, I started acting stupid. Now I'm starting to realize I was trying to sabotage myself as a form of self-punishment." Billy paused. "I think I was believing that I deserved to be lonely."

Auru was quiet, which Billy expected. Then, he said, "I do not understand everything you just said, but I do understand 'lonely'." The caveman held Billy closer, puling him into a spooning position. "That is why I was sad when you said you could not stay with me. Are you going to leave the village soon?"

"I will have to, eventually," Billy said. "But not until I know you are happy and safe here." Smiling in the dark, Billy pressed his fingers over Auru's large hand. "Even if I cannot make you happy, I want to do something to help you."

"You do make me happy, Billy," Auru said. "I am happy we met. So...when the sun rises, let me teach you how to hunt."

As soon as Billy felt Auru's lips against his neck, he sensed where events were proceeding. "I was trying to fall asleep," Billy said, laughing in the dark, changing the subject and trying hard to not become hard. It wasn't working.

"I do not think anybody should have to be lonely," Auru said. "Though being alone can sometimes be good. Just...not for too long."

Billy tensed. He had severely underestimated Auru. "Yeah. I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"For thinking you wouldn't understand because you are a caveman."

"Do you call yourself and your people 'hut-men'? I still do not understand what a caveman is." Auru groaned. "Are you making laughter at me?"

"What! No!" Billy's mind turned to the dreadful thought of Eshana cooking and feeding Billy his sneakers as punishment for being so historically insensitive.

"Ok, good, because I will squeeze you until water does come from out of your eyes!" Auru laughed, but his sudden, tight grip around Billy's mid-section (which did, in fact, caused Billy to squeak) hinted that he wasn't entirely joking.

Billy shifted, either consciously or unconsciously grinding his butt and small of his back into Auru's pelvis. "I'm not sure I will be able to sleep."

"Why?"

"For me, it's hard sleeping on the ground like this. Without a pillow."

"I do not know what a pillow is, but even though you do not have one, you have something better."

"What?"

The big man took his arm, slipped it under Billy's neck, and brought his head right up against his warm chest. "An Auru."

Endorphins seeped into Billy's brain, as well as other sensitive places. His cock twinge at Auru's touch. Not that it ever took a lot to get Billy stiff, but having his face pressed into warm, hard-soft pecs usually did the trick. Billy was hardly tiny, but compared to Auru's mass, it was easy to nest in the curves of his muscles.

"Yeah, much better than a pillow," Billy said. The temptation to touch himself was strong, but he did not want to offend Auru. Prehistoric society had more of a healthy, direct approach to sex and consent than what Billy had always presumed, and he wanted to be mindful of etiquette.

Though, the warm, hard object pushing into the crevasse of Billy's ass was telling. As well as Auru's soft, clipped grunts, the same noises he made whenever he was in 'heat' (which was often).

Billy pushed himself back into Auru. Though the heavy-set hunter could not see it, Billy's sly smile glowed in the dark. "You...seem like you want to cuddle, big guy," he said. "An 'involved' cuddle."

The kiss and nuzzle against Billy's neck was the 'green light' he'd been looking for. As was Auru's closed hand slowly moving up and down  Billy's shaft. "Billy is going to need bravery for the hunt tomorrow," Auru said. "I always do this at night to help put my mind at ease." Auru mouthed and nibbled Billy's neck, while slowly pushing his body against his. "My strong, handsome, mate."

A small gasp escaped Billy's mouth, partly because of Auru's near-perfect way of stroking Billy's cock, and also because Auru had tightened his bicep against Billy's neck, in an effort to bring him closer, but indirectly appealing to Billy's choking kink. Billy surrendered to his desire, and to Auru.

I haven't been milked this perfectly and gently since college. Billy shuddered. He felt himself leak. The wet sounds from Auru's pumping confirmed it. "Auru, that feels so fucking good."

Auru replied with another series of kisses, all to strategic 'weak points' on Billy's neck. "I am happy you find it 'fucking good'," he said.

Which was nearly enough of an unintentionally hilarious statement to kill the mood, but it was a testament to Auru's technique that Billy only moaned and expelled further wet strands of precum onto his own thigh.

Auru gently laughed, nuzzling his beard across Billy's neck in order to add further sensation. "You are squirming," he said, tightening his hold around Billy's head as well as around Billy's wide chest. "You are like when I catch a squirrel."

It took Billy a lot of restraint not to say something mindlessly stupid like, 'Hunt me; I want to be your squirrel.' Not as if he was capable of speech at this point. Billy was glad his head was turned away, for all the faces he was making as a result of Auru's strokes.

Something warm and wet pushed through the gap between Billy's thick thighs, breaching the space just under his heavy, aching balls. Billy looked down to see Auru's round, thick, jewel of a cock pulsing beneath his, overtaking it in girth and length.

"Mmmm." Auru growled with delight, pulling Billy close. He thrusted between Billy's legs, now self-lubricated by his own secretions. "Your thighs are so big and strong. You must be able to run very fast. Good for catching prey."

Apparently, Auru found this hypothesis a major turn on. Billy looked down at Auru's cock, grinding and prodding against his, and watched in wonder as its veins pulsed and head twitched. Auru spurted a long trail of white. Billy worried Auru had shot his shot too soon, but then Auru only pulled and pushed faster and faster, putting Billy's fears to rest.

The visual was enough to take Billy to the edge. Now, Auru had moved on to milking both of them at once, single-handedly, capping each stroke with a satisfying twist at the end. There wasn't a particularly large discrepancy in their lengths, so Auru was able to fit both of their combined manhood easily in his hand.

Billy arched his back, twisting his head so he could attempt to kiss Auru (he managed to get the corner of his lips). "Hold me close," Billy whined. He worried Keedo might walk in on them, but considering the watchman's blaise attitude towards sex, he would probably wouldn't bat an eyelash.

Wet sounds, moans, and low growls filled the hut. Auru was relentless in his kissing and nuzzling of Billy's neck.

"Good Billy," he whispered.

Billy had never been gooder. "Yeahhhh," he moaned, mindlessly, feeling Auru dominate his cock from the bottom. His legs were now drenched. "I'm your good Billy alright. Agh."

Most surprising, it was Auru who came first. The caveman suddenly jerked, a full body convulsion that nearly caused Auru to crush Billy's neck and abdomen. The caveman buried his face into Billy's back and growled, sending waves of reverberation though his mate.

Billy felt a firehose go off between his legs, and actually heard the sound of cum shooting. He looked down to see a flood of silver, viscous white. Auru stroking had taken him to the edge, but Auru's orgasm threw him clean off of it.

"Ohh I'm gonna cum," Billy gasped.

Auru must have been anticipating this, watchful hunter that he was. He released Billy's throat and moved his hand and fingers over Billy's mouth, muffling him. With one final, deliberate, slow stroke, Auru literally pulled the cum out of Billy's cock.

Billy was more of a dribbler than a cum cannon like Auru, but he fired long and heavy all the same. He gasped and bucked against Auru, glad that the caveman had silenced his muffled groans.

When all was done, and Billy starving for oxygen, he turned back at Auru and kissed his wet beard. Cum-covered or no, the men wrapped their arms around each other, savagely kissing and making out while their still-hard members anointed each other with their seed.

"Keedo's floor," was all Billy could say, when he finally recovered the ability to speak. He tried to messily spread the dirt around the literal puddle where he and Auru had collectively sown their loads, but it just made Billy's hands dirty, which made Auru point and laugh.

Rnnnnnnnnnn.

The unearthly low sound, and its accompanying rumble, clipped Auru's laughter short. For what felt like the longest five seconds of Billy's life, Billy just stared, wide-eyed at Auru, throughout a series of tremors.

Billy had experienced only one earthquake before, during his study abroad in Mexico City. But it felt nothing like this. "Earthquake?" Billy whispered to Auru.

Thankfully, the rumbles tapered off. Auru, whose face was quite stern, grunted. "No," he whispered. He slowly extended his hands.

Shattered nerves slowed Billy's ability to process this game of charades. He did his best. "Big? Something big?" By now, his teeth were chattering. His ears, however, picked up nothing more than insect sound outside the hut.

Auru's gesture was clumsy, but it did the trick. He moved his elbow to his nose and swung his arm forward, in an arc. An elephant trunk.

Or, more precisely, a mammoth. It was enough to make Billy lay back down and stare up at the ceiling in fright.

"It is gone," Auru said, surprisingly nonchalant. He laid next to Billy and forced Billy to place his head on his chest. Auru cradled Billy with his arm. "You would know if it was not."

Not the most reassuring words.

Nor were the words that came from Auru next. "Well, now that I have given you some bravery, we can go hunting tomorrow."

Billy sighed. Prehistoric whiplash. "Sure," Billy said. He felt himself, mercifully, drifting into sleep.

Auru grinned. "And we're gonna do it in Strong Elk's forest," he said, slapping his fist inside his palm.

"Yeah," Billy yawned.

And then, "FUCKING WHAT!?"

Chapter 1.5 - It Takes A Village

With only a lion skin wrapped across his thick waist, and sneakers on his feet (Billy was not about to go traipsing into mammoth poop) Billy felt himself acclimating to Auru’s caveman ways.

The pungent smoke rose in great, cloudy puffs from a communal fire in the center of the circle of huts. From his hiding position behind the scrub brush covering, Billy deduced that the dwellings were made from hardened mud, branches, grasses, and an elongated, white, stony material not immediately recognizable.

To Billy, anyway. Auru grunted and spoke softly. “Bone,” he said.

Billy looked down at Auru, and his loincloth. “What, like right now?”

“Huh?” Auru blinked. “Bone of big, shaggy, walking ones. Use for shelter.”

“Oh, you mean mammoth bones! I thought you meant…never mind.” Billy looked back towards the village, specifically its inhabitants, all who had long hair, making it difficult to distinguish gender (if such a concept existed among these people). Some of villagers wore skins that covered their bodies, in the form of primitive shirts and britches to keep out the cold. The clothing and dwellings suggested this was a more advanced society than the one from where Auru originated.

Which did bode well for Billy and Auru, but it was nevertheless wise to approach with caution. While historical research suggested that early man was not likely to ‘kill first and ask questions later', there was no telling how the tribe might react to outsiders.

“Ok, Auru, let’s—”

But Auru had already hopped up from his hiding spot, briskly jaunting over towards a tall individual positioned at the edge of the dwelling space. Probably a ‘watchman’ or guard. Auru stopped. He held his palms open, just like how he had done for Billy. ‘No rock in hands’.

It was hard to calculate the other man’s reaction, but he sprung to attention and crept slowly forward, with a gait suggesting a limp. He made use of a tall walking stick for support. Billy noticed a sharpened stone affixed to its end. It was not just a crutch, but a spear. The kind used to kill mammals.

Which included humans.

Billy swallowed. He had no choice but to trust Auru on this one. My dating must have been off. The type of commune here seems more compatible with the late Gravettian period, but the advanced dwellings and organization structures would suggest a—WOAH LOOK AT HIS HUGE, SWINGING COCK!

Sure enough, the loincloth wrapped around the approaching man’s waist was more of a ‘suggestion’ of modesty, doing nothing to conceal the long, anaconda pendulously swaying in the breeze. While the man was not as thick and sturdy as Auru, he was still quite toned and muscular.

While Auru had the muscle advantage, his barrel chest and penchant for spine-cracking bearhugs would mean nothing if the guard decided to turn him into a caveman kebab.

Observing nervously from his hiding spot, Billy watched as Auru ‘sniffed’ the raven-haired man, who returned by pressing his forehead against Auru’s. Even if its exact meaning was lost on Billy, it was an intimate gesture. Safe. Billy exhaled with relief.

Auru pointed to Billy. The spear man turned his head in the direction of the bush, which was Billy’s queue to slowly rise and perform the ‘open hand’ gesture himself. He walked forward and tried keeping his eyes above the spearman’s beltline.

“I am Keedo,” the spearman said, clearly, with a certain boyishness in his voice. “Protector of this village.” Keedo was fresh faced, smooth, and younger than Auru.

“Auru,” Auru said.

“We…we come in peace!” Billy stammered.

Keedo smiled, but looked upon Billy like he was an idiot. “I…would hope so,” he said, carefully. Keedo shifted his weight, using his spear for leverage. “Come, I will show you to Eshana.”

He speaks normally? “We…should probably do as he says,” Billy said to Auru, who nodded in agreement. “After all, he’s got a big weapon. And that spear of his looks pretty deadly too.”

Billy and Auru followed Keedo close behind. The tall guardian walked slow on account of his limp, but this told Billy several things. For one, if the guy with the busted leg was the best guard the tribe could muster, it suggested something about their low reserves of capable bodies.

It also suggested that Keedo’s people were both cooperative and altruistic. Billy’s favorite anthropology diva, Margaret Mead, wrote that a broken and set femur was the first hallmark of civilization. It meant that someone had taken care of the injured, brought them food from hunts, and tended to their wounds until they were healed. Keedo wasn’t just a prehistoric twunk with a huge cock, he was also a living, breathing testament to human cooperation.

"Who is Eshana?" Billy asked.

"The Elder," Keedo responded.

While Keedo led the way, Billy took silent inventory of the objects propped against the stones and logs. Nets. Spears. Arrow heads. Even a tool remarkably similar to a boomerang. These were mostly hunting tools. With a dearth of edible vegetation during this colder epoch, the inhabitants of the valley likely subsisted on a meat-based diet of elk, mammoth, reindeer, and smaller game.

There were very few other people in the village, or at least, very few people outside the mud huts. Most of the women wore coverings, though a few were bare breasted. Children of both sexes staid close to their side, though a few others gathered around men—who were either quite young or elderly, with very little age range between. The villagers watched Billy and Auru with wary apprehension. None of them approached.

Though Billy was eager to observe the villagers going about their daily business, he considered the fact that ogling and gawking at them might put them off, and it was probably for the best not to compromise his and Auru’s situation. In any case, Billy’s musings on primitive man were interrupted by the tell-tale sound of heavy breathing and wet, 'slapping’ noises. Billy turned his head towards a space between two huts, where he watched a long-haired woman on all fours, mounted from behind by a male Keedo’s age.

They were going AT it. Blushing, Billy promptly looked away, though the two lovers seemed hardly bothered by his and Auru’s presence.

Despite himself, Billy blurted out. “Oh, they are fucking.” He looked to Keedo and Auru, who were unbothered. “Right in broad daylight!”

Keedo’s raised his thick eyebrows. His aquamarine eyes lit up. “Is it strange to you?” he said, without an ounce of judgment. “Does your tribe not...as you say...fuck?”

“Oh no, we fuck. Just…I think we’re less open about doing it in public. Unless we're at Folsom.”

Keedo took Billy at his word. "This tribe of 'Folsom' sounds intriguing." Smiling proudly, he pointed to several individual seated at their labors. “Back there is my mate, Meeka,” he said. “And over there is my mate, Tii and her mate, Jolu. And that is my son and daughter over there being watched by Jee and her mate Kika.” He had easily named most of the villagers outside the huts.

Billy’s heart was warmed. “Lesbians!”

“We are a happy people,” Keedo said.

Score one point for polyamory, Billy thought. “Yeah, I’d say so!”

The three men had to lower their heads in order to enter the large hut at the end of the village. Inside was a small fire pit, its embers still glowing. A hunched figure in a animal skin shawl made a small, irritated noise and rose up from her position on a grass mat.

“What is it now?” the old woman croaked. The small bones ornamenting her neck rattled as she turned towards the newcomers. “Oh.”

The old woman was very small, and though the skins she wore had long since greyed, she herself was full of color. Her teeth were yellow, cracked, and lacking in number. Billy saw that her ochre-colored skin was carved with lines, and her hair was as white as the glaciers in the great valley distance. Her eyes, which were an almost otherworldly blue, sparkled with knowledge.

She was the most beautiful person Billy had ever seen.

Much like Keedo, the elder used a long stick—bound with feathers and bird skulls at the head—to maneuver herself around the fire pit. She examined Billy and Auru closely.

“I am called Eshana,” she said. “Many-In-Years.”

On instinct, Auru bowed his head respectfully. “Eldress.” Billy followed his lead and did the same.

“Yes, that is correct.” Her eyes travelled between Billy and Auru. “And who may you two friends be?”

Even in awe, Billy tried to find his manners. “I’m Billy,” he said to Eshana. Keedo watched them, carefully, from his position at the entrance of the hut. He was a powerful presence.

With a grumpy, yet affable disposition, Eshana shuffled between Billy and Auru, giving them a keen-eyed observation. “This one seems shy,” she said, tapping her cane against Auru’s belly. “But strong, and quite virile.”

Auru smiled. “Auru wish to mate.”

Billy felt himself turn red. “Wow, it's straight to business with you, huh?”

“Very well,” Esana said, simply, with a shrug. “But not with gray-haired me! My mating days are over. Thank the gods. But there are many women here who would make capable mates. And we are in dire need of more little ones, ever since…”

She trailed off. Billy leaned in, wanting to know more. The Eldress approached the entrance to her hut and pointed her stick towards a gathering of women working happily, in tandem, on stitching tanned skins into a suitable covering.

“Perhaps Uleena would suit you?” Eshana said to Auru. She aimed her cane at the slim woman in the center of the group, affixing downy fur to the collar of the tunic.

“Uleena pretty,” Auru said, earnestly. “Like flower.” He turned, however, towards the slender, sturdy, young man guarding the hut. “But…Auru want Keedo!”

Keedo was nonplussed. “You honor me, Auru, but I am afraid I do not mate with men.”

Auru smiled affectionately at him. “Ah! Then Keedo will be friend only.”

While Billy remained bewildered by prehistoric social etiquette, Eshana was amused by Auru’s ways. “Hmmm…it seems this one does not wish to mate with women.” She shoo herk head, still smiling, but the frustration was plain across her face. “An imposition, to be sure. But to force one upon another would bring down the wrath of the Great Mother.” Eshana gestured her adorned cane towards the back of the hut.

Billy hadn’t yet noticed the two objects resting on the altar of mammoth bones. He nearly lost his composure. The two icons, made of baked clay, were rather crudely fashioned idols: a curvaceous, big breasted ‘feminine’ figure, and her companion, a horned, ‘masculine’ icon with a prominent phallus. Not even motor-mouthed Billy could come up with the words to express his amazement at what were, quite possibly, the first true examples of ‘religion’ in human history.

In any case, Eshana was focused more on the practicalities of Auru and Billy’s arrival, than spiritual matters. “If you have come to our village, I take it you are searching for food, or a new tribe. Hmm?”

Auru’s eyes turned sad. “Auru’s people…gone.”

“I see.” Eshana pursed her lips together. Billy saw the ‘gears’ turning in her old head. “Well, you seem a capable hunter. You may yet earn a position in our clan.”

Billy was happy to hype up his big buddy. He nudged Auru in the ribs. “Oh, this guy is like the best hunter ever! Right?”

Auru smiled and pounded his fist against his pectoral (which wiggled upon impact). “Urgh!”

That seemed to suit Eshana. “Most promising!”

Billy spoke up. “And I—”

“I will address you in a moment,” Eshana said curtly, pointing her stick in Billy’s face. That shut him up. She explained herself to both of her guests. “We are the Clan of the Bulls, for this is the Valley of the Bulls that migrate inward with the turning of the moons.”

“Oh, did you hear that, big-guy?” Billy said. “Literally a village with your name on it.”

Auru understood. “Auru,” he said again. He pointed at himself. Then, to improve upon his meaning, he placed his hands to his head and hooked his fingers, pantomiming a pair of aurochs horns.

Eshana’s eyes sparkled like the embers in the fire pit. “Ah, a blessing from the Great Bull Father!” She turned and acknowledged the ‘male’ idol on the altar. “To send one of his sons in a time of great need. Then, it is as I saw in the throwing of the bones.”

Her statement clued Billy into her position as both elder and diviner, which spoke to her esteem and rank among the village. He noted the voluptuous, feminine figure on the altar was larger than her male companion, which hinted at a matriarchal structure, perhaps one where men were seen more as instruments of fertility.

Sign me up, Billy thought.

Eshana brought Billy back to focus by tapping the tip of her cane against the front of his shoe. “Your feet are most unusual,” she said, wrinkling her nose. She had no qualms with placing her boney fingers on the chain around Billy’s neck. “And you wear melted stones! Perhaps you are a shaman?” She cocked her head to the side, but quickly dismissed the notion. “No. I see not much in the way of divinity in your eyes.”

She wasn’t wrong, but it still stung all the same, and Billy was not about to whip out his smart phone and risk giving these folk a heart attack or radically altering the course of human history.

Instead, he wriggled out of his footwear. “Oh, my kicks?”

Keedo gasped. “HE TOOK OFF HIS FEET!” Fearful, he pointed his spear at Billy.

Eshana was quick to hold out her hand to assure him. “They appear to be coverings, Keedo. Be at ease!”

Auru came to Billy’s defense. “Bil-Lee here from sky!”

“Right,” Billy said…’til he whipped his head towards Auru. “What!?”

Auru gave him a look that said, ‘I thought you knew?’ “Yes,” he said again. “Bil-Lee a sky person.” And, while Billy didn’t quite exactly understand what this meant, Auru pointing to the two figures in the back was enough of a hint.

Eshana laughed. “Fah! Sweet Auru, I would know well the messengers of the Great Mother and Father. While I have no doubt your coming is indeed of great providence, Billy here is likely from a distant tribe.” She poked Billy’s stomach and biceps. “You seem well fed, in any case. Are you a hunter too?”

“No. I…er…” It was difficult for Billy to translate his job (or lack thereof) into a prehistoric context. “My role in the society I come from...is that I tell the stories of places, people, and events that happened a long time ago.”

Finally, Eshana’s eyes softened. “Ahhh, a storyteller! A steward of knowledge.” She nodded, approvingly. “A fine role indeed. Though, your tribe must have so many more capable hunters than yourself, if all you do is sit around telling stories..."

Billy was now beginning to understand that the concept of a disapproving, older auntie was one that transcended history. “Eldress, how come you and Keedo speak normally, but Auru here speaks…like that?” He motioned to a very confused Auru, scratching his head.

Eshana reeled back, taking offense on the caveman’s behalf. Billy realized he had ‘stepped in it’ now. “What!? Fool boy! There as many tongues in heads as there are tribes. Or campfires in the night sky! All of them with a different ebb and flow of voice. How is it strange to you that this one,” she motioned to Auru, “who is quite intelligence, speaks different? Sounds to me that you need some decent wisdom beaten into that thick head of yours!”

Wincing at the verbal dressing down, Billy looked to Keedo for guidance, but the man turned his eyes sideways. Billy had seen the same exact look on his little brother’s face when they’d gotten in trouble together.

Before Billy could prattle off a weak excuse, Eshana raised her stick high and brought it down over Billy’s head, knocking his skull silly.

WHAP!

Granted it was an abbreviated black-out, maybe only a few seconds long, but Billy’s world blinked out of being. Darkness washed in and receded like a turn of the tides, and when Billy awoke, it was to a painful lump on his head.

“Ughh…”

“Billy? Hey, Billy are you alright? Looks like she hit you pretty good. Hahaha!”

Head stinging and vision still blurry, Billy managed to pull his head off the ground. “I think so,” he said through his clenched jaw. “Who is…talking? Keedo?” Billy wearily looked around the hut. It was empty, except for him and Auru.

A strong pair of hands lifted Billy onto his feet, stabilizing him. “What? Billy, it’s me.” Auru pressed his face—nearly nose-to-nose—against Billy. “Have we not been sharing a cave for the last two moons? Hahaha! Here. Maybe you need a reminder!”

SMOOCH!

Auru fastened his lips onto Billy’s, just as he brought him in for a too-tight hug. Billy pulled away, coughing, choking on his own saliva (as well as Auru’s) and trying to breathe.

“Oh, I always forget my own strength,” Auru said, bashfully. He let Billy down. “Are you okay? I didn’t break anything, did I?”

That smack up the head must have adjusted Eros’s translation magic, Billy speculated. He shook the shock from his head. “A-A-Auru! You’re speaking like—" He cut himself off, Eshana’s blow to his head still stinging. “I mean…wow!”

Auru must have thought Billy was more than a little dim at this point. He crossed his large arms over his larger chest. “Of course, I’m speaking! I have been speaking to you this whole time. Why…why are you looking at me like that? Anyways, Eshana told me to bring you down to the river when you woke up. She’s going to introduce us to the rest of the village. We better go!”

As if Billy had much of a choice. Auru grabbed onto his arm and pulled him (dragged, was more like it) through the door. “Er…right.”

“Maybe there will be more men like Keedo there.” Auru scrunched up his face, in deep thought. “You can present yourself to them like you did with me, and I’m sure they’ll want to mate with us in no time!”

With a friendly smack on the bum that left Billy feeling raw and red, Auru marched on ahead.

Billy sighed. “RIP my hole.” He wasn't that concerned with meeting the tribe. He felt safer here in the village than he did when he'd set foot in prehistory two days ago. What bothered him now was Eros's tricky puzzle. If Billy was tasked to be help Auru find 'love', and there were no eligible bachelors here in the village, then what did that mean for Billy's chances at returning home?

Billy suddenly worried if he was going to be on this anthropological 'field trip' for much, much longer than he first thought.

Chapter 1.4 - A Fire in the Distance

As the flesh-light fruit’s magic wore off, the soreness it had prevented finally made itself known. Billy—in great pain—laid down by the fire and turned his head away while Auru went about flaying and dressing the wildcat carcass. Thankfully, Auru’s special moss did wonders for Billy’s puffy, gaping, and throbbing hole.

Removing the clump of soothing grass from his opening, Billy mostly felt embarrassed with himself. He had never bottomed like that before. Nor could he remember the last time he came that hard, either. It was like the hit of a soporific drug. Despite the pain, Billy basked in the afterglow. Maybe that Eros isn’t such a naughty boy after all. Still, I can't stay here stuck as a cavebride! What if Auru doesn't let me go?

Then again...the sex. :)

Then again...the future of my rectal health. :(

Night fell. Billy, thankful for Auru's gift of fire, could only imagine what terrifying beasts prowled outside the shelter—things more frightening than the cave lion, or things that modern man had no record of, nor ever would. The thought chilled Billy to the core (which did nothing to help his hole). Just enough danger to make things interesting, he recalled Eros saying.

In time, Auru affixed slices of wet meat to skewers, which he placed at lengths around the fire to cook. Billy remembered he had brought food in his backpack, but then decided it was probably for the best he not open up the bag and offer Auru an energy bar. If it didn’t kill him, Auru’s stomach was bound to reject all the modern chemicals and preservatives, and the last thing Billy needed was a sick caveman. So, Billy chose to graciously accept the tough, leathery meat, thankful it was charred enough as to not cause concern for parasites.

Auru really wasn’t one for words. Post-mating session, he was content to guard Billy in kind, protective silence. After they had eaten, and both of them still naked, he motioned for Billy to join him on the leafy bedding, where he nested Billy into his buddy, spooning him and holding him close to his warm bosom.

He was one cuddly caveman.

The two men’s bodies must have known each other better than their hearts, because at some point during the night, Billy found Auru’s hands around his shaft, stroking him while kissing the nape of his neck. Primal urges seized Billy anew, though in softer waves. Billy turned over to make out with his mate, pawing at his chest the whole while. He was still too sore to ‘rut’ again, but not too sore to cum. So, Auru and Billy ‘made a fire’ in their own way, rubbing and humping each other with the residual lubricant from their magic gourd. Shaft crossed shaft. Auru leaked onto Billy, creating more slippery sensation for both of them.

Billy found this way of sex even more primitive and arousing. It was also more equitable. No receiver. No giver. Just two men caught in each other’s arms. Billy would not soon forget Auru’s grunts and animalistic groans, or the way his dark, shining eyes widened before reaching orgasm. Auru tilted his head back and roared out in pure bliss.

Overwhelmed by the primal eroticism of it all, and the sensation of Auru’s meaty cock rubbing all over his own, Billy had no choice but to cum with him. They coated each other’s stomachs and chests, and then fell down—sweaty—into each other’s arms again, the sound of their throes of passion replaced by the crackle of the fire.

Auru’s heavy body weighed down on top of Billy, who couldn’t move even if he wanted. It also didn’t help his comfort that they hadn’t yet cleaned each other off, and so now there was a sweaty, beefy, cum-soaked caveman splayed on top of him.

Billy whispered. “Erm...big guy?”

A snore answered him. Billy had put the caveman to sleep.

Billy was envious. He had trouble falling asleep in new places, no matter how comfortable, so trying to find sleep in a pile of leaves on a cavernous floor posed somewhat of a challenge. Thankfully, Auru’s pecs made for perfect pillows, and he was a champion cuddler. Soft, warm, and strong, the prehistoric gentleman held Billy throughout the night until the traveler from the future slipped into unconsciousness.

    Sleep was not dreamless.

Billy sat inside the glass enclosure surrounding the museum's Tyrannosaurus Rex display, the centerpiece of the fossil collection. Dressed only in his jock strap, Billy stared down at his phone, while guests crowded around took photos. The museum visitors were all Billy's friends, family, and even his math teacher.

Humiliated, and not in the sexy way, Billy looked pleadingly at one of his and James's mutual friends, Steve. "Bro, can you hand me a towel?"

Steven, a curly haired twink with a septum piercing, made a disgusted face. "Not 'til you go to therapy, like we all asked. You fucked it all up with James. Now you have to sit in there like a big, dumb baby!"

Emotions Billy would otherwise regulate in waking life forced their way up through his throat and spilled like venom from his lips. "Well fuck you and the other guys, asshole! I don't need you. Or anybody. I've got my work. My research. You gossipy queens are just a distraction!"

Suddenly, Steve turned to stone. Mortified, the visitors gasped and began yelling and hurling curses, soda cans, and pieces of popcorn at Billy.

"You belong in there! You belong in there!"

"Yeah, yeah, where I won't hurt anybody," Billy sniffed, indignantly. Nothing here was real, except for the text conversation blipping on Billy's cracked screen. It had occurred sometime between Billy's most recent breakup and a slightly less recent breakup. It was a vestige of a failure to launch, fossilized in time.

I just wanted to say, I really enjoyed our last two dates and was wondering if you wanted to plan a third. I don't usually put my feelings out like this, but I'm really vibing with you. Beauty and brains is hard to come by these days. :)

Billy sighed and tried texting back, but every time he did, the phone screen felt like gelatine and the words came out wrong.

Around him, Billy's uninvited audience pointed and laughed. Auru, dressed exactly like Billy's docent mentor, down to the lanyard, pointed out the 'Neanderthal' in his underwear trying to work the smartphone.

"Here we have early man, undertaking a ritual known to some as 'ghosting'." Auru adjusted his glasses. "You see, primitive man could not properly confront his feelings. Rather than incur the wrath of someone who desired him, or try and engage with his predator directly, the subject here relies on the flight instinct. It is either this, or wet himself in self-defence. Let's see how this plays out, shall we?"

"But I'm not into piss play!" Billy shot back, aghast. He swallowed. The phone in his hands had completely turned to stone, just like Steve. "I...only wanted to tell him it wasn't the right time to start something," Billy said, with a shit-eating grin.

Auru tut-tutted, clucking his tongue in his mouth. "But that's not what happened, is it? You froze that boy out. Just like you froze everyone else out that you cared about."

"B-but I was in the middle of a huge project," Billy protested. "If he got angry at me, I was going to doom spiral and feel like shit, and I wouldn't be able to focus. It was better that way for both of us!"

The audience began to boo loudly. They had switched from chucking popcorn to hurling whole tomatoes, which landed with slick, wet plops all around Billy's enclosure. Soon, Auru's lubricated, 'flesh-light' fruit joined the slop thrown at the 'primitive man' behind glass.

"You know what happens now, don't you?" Auru asked, with a vicious grin—nothing like the sweet, lovable cave-stud who'd 'unga-bunga'd' Billy's prostate in the waking world. He jerked his thumb at something behind Billy.

Naked and afraid, Billy turned around. "James!? NO! AHHH, GOD, NO!"

The T. Rex skeleton had taken on the face of his most recent ex. With an earth shaking roar, it opened its mouth and engulfed Billy whole.

    "Bil-Lee?"

Earthquake! Billy woke up to the world shaking. "I don't wanna' be eatin' like that," Billy whined, sleepily, soon realizing it wasn't the ground shaking at all, but Auru rocking Billy from his nightmare. "Huh?

The caveman looked down at Billy with soft-concern. "Ung?"

Embarrassed, Billy sighed and turned over. "Sorry," was all he could say, which probably made as much sense to Auru as it did to Billy.

The muscular hunter of lions made a soft, sympathetic noise and wrapped his arms and legs around Billy--nearly too tight--drawing him in closer. Billy found Auru's bearded face, nuzzling the back of his shoulder, a comfort. Like his 'mate', Billy tried hunting for sleep, but it proved an elusive mark.

Dawn at the dawn of mankind was a beautiful sight. The sky above the steppe was pale blue, slashed with a bloody streaks or red. Amid dusk, Auru roused Billy, dressed him in a spare loincloth (which was not a bad look) and compelled his guest to follow him into prehistoric parts unknown.

Tired, and not exactly thrilled at traipsing amid the brush with only a strip of lion skin to cover up his soft bits, Billy warily proceeded into the ancient glen. If it weren’t for the spirited Auru’s brisk pace and insistence on stopping every five or so seconds to ‘smell the air’ for danger, Billy would have gladly paused to examine any number of the ferns or flowers among the growth. There was a very good chance the flora here no longer existed in Billy’s time. It was an opportunity for study that other historians would die for.

“Where are you taking me now?” Billy groaned, swatting away an unidentifiable insect he hoped wouldn’t lay eggs in his skin.

Auru glowed among his wild element, striding along proudly as king of the forest. “To the waters,” Auru said. “Need bathe. Dangerous if animals pick up scent.”

Who thought prehistoric man had better hygiene than 99% of anime con attendees! “Sounds good. I could go for a bath.” Billy looked among the old, tall trees. He assumed Auru would know if they were being stalked by cave lions. “Hey, Auru, have you met any other people since…” Billy cut himself off, unsure of how to appropriately address what happened to Auru’s tribe.

The caveman, thankfully, appeared unbothered. He ripped away an overhanging branch impeding their path, as if the tree limb were nothing but a piece of paper. “This one has tried to find others. Elders always say that other tribes in valley are ‘friends’, but…” Auru slunk his shoulders in defeat. “This one has not found friends.”

“Cheer up, big buddy.” Billy placed a hand on Auru’s hefty shoulder. “Maybe you can put those wicked hunting senses to good use and track down another tribe.” From what Billy knew of this period, suspicion-based hostilities between clans were relatively low, and it was common for tribes to take in outsiders.

The temporal complexity of the word ‘maybe’ was probably still beyond Auru’s grasp, but his face reflected back doubt. This brief bout of sadness quickly passed when Auru cocked his head to the side and pointed between the bushes. “The water!” He smiled at Billy, tapped him on the head, and dashed off.

“Oh, a race, huh?” Billy laughed and pursued his caveman quarry onto the flat grasses. Something about running through the woods, in nary a shred of clothing, laughing, and jostling an equally near-naked man, was strangely liberating. This ‘return to nature’ moment was welcomingly primal and masculine, but in a healthy way.

The ‘waters’ turned out to be a breath-taking waterfall basin at the bottom of a cliff face, where a steady cascade churned the shallow spring. The beautiful sights froze Billy to the spot, effectively knocking him out of the ‘impromptu’ race.

“Raggggh!” Auru roared, happily beating his chest. He tore away his loincloth, tossed it into the sand, and then did what Billy could only describe as a ‘prehistoric cannonball’ into the water, causing a massive splash.

Wet hair, flattened across his beck and shoulders, looked good on Auru. He bobbed in the water. “Bill-Lee! Come!”

“Er, okay!” For all his amorous bravado, Billy had always been a bit shy about skinny dipping. He undid the loose skins around his waist and carefully approached the water’s edge. His naked reflection stared back at him. Oh man, what if there’s weird bacteria or parasites in there?

“RAGGH!”

Forget ‘dipping his toes’ into the water. Auru wrapped his giant, wet arms around Billy’s waistline and yanked him into the pool.

“You Palaeolithic putz!” Billy yelled back, flailing—but also laughing in the chest-high watering hole. “You wanna’ play like that, huh?” He scooped up a handful of the clear water and splashed Auru.

The caveman attempted to deflect the attack with his hands. He grinned, his eyes and mischievous smile suggesting prompt retaliation. “Raggggh!”

Billy suddenly realized that Auru had much, much more muscle on him. “Oh sh—”

Over two-hundred pounds of wet caveman pulled Billy into a vice-grip of a headlock, shoving him around in the water, but mindful not to dunk him under. Auru laughed, tossing Billy into the drink, and sending wave after wave in his direction.

Billy did his best to fight back, confronting Auru in a wet, clumsy grapple that terminated in both their bodies and limbs folding around each other. Their mouths soon followed. Kissing, wet, and naked and warm, Billy couldn't help but grow erect. Auru's girthy 'caveman club' met the moment...but nothing more.

Billy lost himself to Auru’s gentle touch, the warmth of his wet body, and the sound of waterfall and bird song. It was the closest Billy could imagine to wandering among the Garden of Eden—with his own, personal ‘Adam’ at his side, no less.

Billy also knew it was foolish to imagine staying here. The need for modern comforts and technology would swiftly crush any sense of novelty, and no amount of beefy, cuddly caveman would change that.

Still, tomorrow—all of history’s tomorrows—could wait. For now, Billy was blissfully content to kiss and play in the water with Auru, untethered to the future.

Once again providing the perfect pillow, Auru laid down on the grass by the spring, letting Billy snuggle up to him, while the sun naturally dried their skin. The men said nothing to each other. Billy was fine with that.

After a time, the two rose. Billy had grown so comfortable with his newfound nudism that he nearly forgot the loincloth Auru had given him. Auru generously tied it around Billy’s waist for him, then nodded for Billy to follow him back towards the den.

Granted, it was always difficult to force conversations during dates, but Billy felt especially lost trying to come up with something, anything, to tell Auru. There was also that rising tide of melancholy, a swell that Billy had, up until now, dammed up with research, writing, and other assorted distractions and vices.

Truth was, Auru was the first man Billy had shared intimacy with since James—the ex. On the night the god of love himself had come calling, it had been two weeks since James had ended things. Billy hadn’t found a new apartment yet, and so spent the post-breakup sleeping on various couches or overnights at the museum. During daylight, he attempted to avoid James as much as possible, while still attending to apartment chores (mostly).

Hook-ups hadn’t even crossed Billy's mind. He had locked himself off to intimacy and passion long before Eros had placed his charm around Billy’s neck. Now, there was Auru. Another beautiful distraction. Sure, he was hunky, and kind, and beautiful, and he wanted to make Billy his ‘mate’, which was a primitive sexy idea.

It was also the problem. Even a caveman was bound to have ‘expectations’, and according to the rules of Eros’s game, Billy was in no position to meet them. He was destined to move on to another time zone once the task was fulfilled here.

Auru might be built out of solid stone, but his heart was soft. Vulnerable. Billy would need to let him down gently.

Midway through the trek, Billy looked over at Auru and sighed. It was time to get real. “So…I can’t stay here.”

“Huh?” Auru turned back. His wide, watery eyes made Billy’s heart melt.

If Eros intended this ‘game’ as an opportunity for Billy’s personal growth, then Billy was going to have to reluctantly seize the moment. “Alright, look. I have a bad habit of sometimes getting excited and stringing guys along, you see.”

“What does Bill-Lee mean?” Auru scratched at his still-wet hair. “Why can Bill-Lee not stay with Auru?”

Billy grimaced. This is going to be harder than I thought. Even with the loincloth wrapped tightly around him, Billy felt more naked than before. “Auru, I don’t want you thinking that I can actually stick around here to be your boyf—your mate. And I hate to break it to you, but I don’t even have a uterus!”

The muscular hunter stared at Billy blankly.

Billy rolled his eyes. He pantomimed giving birth, which was probably the stupidest way he’d ever let a guy down. “Babies. I cannot give you babies.”

Auru squinted. “Why?”

Here I am, giving sex education to a caveman. Has Eros sent me to the past, or to Hell? “Well, technically speaking, there are some men who can make babies, but I’m not one of them. I can’t give you kids.” Billy bit his lip. “Though it was a hell of a lot of fun TRYING! Hahaha. Am I right, big guy?”

Auru responded with a glare and a grunt.

Incidentally, Billy was suddenly reminded that Auru could probably snap his back in half like a twig. “Er…but more importantly, I can’t stay here with you. I'll have to…move on.” Come on, Eros, give me a sign!

Auru examined Billy for a solid minute, enough time that Billy considered Auru might actually eat him. Instead, Auru sadly huffed and turned away, giving Billy the coldest of shoulders.

“Ouch. Hehehe. And I thought this was supposed to be the end of the ice age…am I right.” He swallowed. "Am I right?"

Auru’s back stiffened. Billy couldn’t see Auru’s face, but it wasn’t necessary. “Do not make laughter. Auru’s heart hurts because of Bill-Lee.”

Dread and guilt poured into Billy’s chest. He bit his lip. He forgot how to walk. He was stung. “I’m…really sorry, big guy.”

A few paces away, Auru stopped. He turned, slowly, and looked at Billy. He said nothing, but his eyes spoke for him. Well, are you coming or not, you ass?

“Coming,” Billy mumbled. Consider the following note for chapter: whether the 2020s, or 20 thousand years ago, rejections suck.

 “This one…needs to find tribe.”

In the firelit den, Billy turned around. Behind Auru, the skin of the flayed lion tanned on the dull embers of the fire. It illuminated Auru in a hazy, vermillion glow, transforming his flesh into polished copper.

Sadness crossed his handsome face. "Bil-Lee cannot be Auru's mate."

A perfect case of modern man underestimating his predecessor, Billy took a step back. He figured he should be relieved that Auru had finally accepted Billy’s clumsy ‘let down’, but the man’s keener insight caught him completely guard.

“Auru know.” The caveman looked at him with sad, watery eyes. “Will…be alone again. But Bill-Lee won’t be happy if Bill-Lee stay here.” The caveman balled up his fists. “This one…wants Bill-Lee not to be sad.”

Adrenaline fumbled attempt at reassurance. “I would be happy with you in any other circumstance other than prehistoric cohabitation!”

Even a 20+ thousand-year-old caveman didn’t believe that for a second. “Hrmmm,” was what he softly growled, but the subtext was louder: I already let you off the hook, so don’t tell me it ‘can’t work’ and then make excuses about not being ‘built’ for this.

“Yeah. Well. Anyway.” Billy exhaled. "Oh Auru, I wish…"

“Huh?” Auru snapped his head towards the shelter entrance. His beautiful, long hair whipped with him.

Billy flinched. “Danger? Another lion?”

“Smell…fire.”

“Not this fire, right?” Billy looked at the glowing coals in the pit. But then again, I don’t have the senses of a caveman. “What is…?”

Auru pushed past him. Billy had no choice but to follow. The two men both zeroed in on the trail of white smoke off in in the middle of the tundra.

Auru scrunched up his face. “Bad.”

“A wildfire,” Billy absently said. Then, an idea struck. “Auru, are you the only person who knows how to make fire around here?” he paused. “Hot light? Fire?”

The caveman looked at him, confused. “Elder say…he learn how to make fire from wise people from another tribe.”

Inside Billy’s brain, a different sort of ‘hot light’ came into being. A ‘lightbulb’. “Auru, that could be people down there, at the bottom of the slope. That fire might be a campfire!”

It was obvious Auru hadn’t considered the possibility that there were others who held the same knowledge as him. Auru shifted forward, in a way that reminded Billy’s of his ‘hunter stance’. He smelled the air.

“Uuuahggh!?”

Auru grabbed Billy’s arm so hard that he was afraid he might dislocate it. “What, WHAT!” He followed Auru’s sight line to a circle of trees near the trail of white smoke.

Small shapes, undeniably man-made structures, were barely visible in the scrubland near the smoke.

Auru’s eyes came to life. “People!” he said. “That’s…people.”

Auru stared at the smoke for a good long while. Billy held his breath. "Well," he started, lifting up his cap to scratch his hair, "I guess this is where--"

Before Billy could protest, Auru grabbed Billy by the arm and pulled him down the hill. He grunted, harshly. "Billy no run," he said, with a glint in his eyes bordering on mischief.

There was no use trying to free his hand. Now, Billy knew what a dog on a leash felt like (and surprisingly, this was the first time). "Hey, dude, wait! I never said—"

"Billy learn to be brave," Auru said. His eyes remained trained on the smoke. "We go together. We find tribe. You and me."

"What happened to us not being mates?"

Auru smiled. "We will mate with others! Strong and virile, you and me!"

Just when Billy thought he'd made a clean break, he was now on the fast track to a first-hand anthropological experience. Sure enough, the tell-tale shape of primitive dwellings, mud huts, peeked through the tundra brush.

The emotional contrast between the two men couldn't be more drastic. Auru looked like a kid on Christmas Day (which was especially funny as this was B.C.) Billy, however, dreaded making tribal contact.

What if they think I'm a god? What if they sacrifice me to their god? What if they eat me? Hey, what if they eat me out? Even though all of that was, historically speaking, unlikely from what Billy knew of early man, there were still plenty of 'unknowns'.

"If tribe has strong hunters like Auru," the big man excitedly piped up, "maybe Bil-Lee mate with all? Good way to show this one is good one, and not harmful one." Auru belly laughed, but Billy suspected he was being entirely serious.

Billy clenched. He prayed there was a lot more flesh-light fruit and anti-pain moss down in that village. He was gonna' need it.
